Whitewater Kayaking
Whitewater Kayaking is considered more of an adventurous discipline; offering everything from a fun, bouncy ride on small waves to runs that will satisfy a hardcore adrenaline junkie. These boats are typically much smaller than rec and touring boats and are designed to be very maneuverable and can be rolled, or brought back to an upright position when flipped. This style of kayaking requires instruction and specialized equipment. Whitewater kayaks come in a wide variety of designs for different types of activity. The more popular categories are: playboats, river runners, and creek boats. Other categories would include slalom, downriver racing, squirt boating, and the fairly new category of the crossover kayak.
What’s Whitewater Kayaking All About?
Whitewater kayaking gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself, to the degree that you feel comfortable. You can do as little or as much as you would like. You can paddle hard for a good workout or relax and have an easier day. It is great exercise, an excellent way to relieve stress, and can be quite exhilarating as well. You can choose from a river with smaller more manageable features or you can venture to a more demanding or extreme run (with the appropriate skills, of course). Whitewater rapids are classified from Class 1 thru Class 5 (and sometimes 6) with features that include eddy’s, standing waves, playholes, and waterfalls, to name a few.
